This experiment was conducted as part of a risk mitigation payload aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-101. The objectives were to test a newly developed water delivery system, and to determine the optimal combination of water volume and substrate for the imbibition and germination of flax (Linum usitatissimum) seeds in space. Two different combinations of germination paper were tested for their ability to absorb, distribute, and retain water in microgravity. A single layer of thick germination paper was compared with one layer of thin germination paper under a layer of thick paper. Paper strips were cut to fit snugly into seed cassettes, and seeds were glued to them with the micropyle ends pointing outward. Water was delivered in small increments that traveled through the paper via capillary action. Three water delivery volumes were tested, with the largest (480 microliters) outperforming the 400 microliters and 320 microliters volumes for percent germination (90.6%) and root growth (mean=4.1 mm) during the 34-hour spaceflight experiment. The ground control experiment yielded similar results, but with lower rates of germination (84.4%) and shorter root lengths (mean=2.8 mm). It is not clear if the roots emerged more quickly in microgravity and/or grew faster than the ground controls. The single layer of thick germination paper generally exhibited better overall growth than the two layered option. Significant seed position effects were observed in both the flight and ground control experiments. Overall, the design of the water delivery system, seed cassettes and the germination paper strip concept was validated as an effective method for promoting seed germination and root growth under microgravity conditions.  相似文献

Complex observations in the framework of the CORONAS-F Mission aimed at the study of active phenomena inthe solar corona are described. The main features are given for the following experiments: (1) XUV-imaging spectroscopy with high temporal and spatial resolution, (2) X-ray spectroscopy, (3) X-ray and gamma-ray photometer/spectrometer, and (4) solar cosmic rays. We report here on preliminary results of a systematic study of fast temporal fluctuations in impulsive and extended solar X-ray bursts observed by PHEBUS at energies around 100 keV. Subsecond timescales are quite common in the impulsive events and are not observed in extended ones.  相似文献

Fluxes of trapped protons with energies above 70 MeV measured onboard the NOAA-15 satellite during the 23rd solar activity cycle (from 1999 to 2006) are analyzed. Comparing to similar experimental data obtained for 1976–1996, regularities of changes in the proton flux at low drift shells (L = 1.14–1.20) of the Earths’s radiation belt caused by changes in the solar activity are discussed.  相似文献

Numerical analysis of thermal conditions for a two-phase closed thermosyphon using the ANSYS FLUENT software package has been carried out. The characteristic temperature distribution, streamlines and velocity vectors for various heat loads have been obtained. In this paper, we discuss the main ways of improving the aircraft aerodynamics. The results of a physical experiment are presented that is aimed to verify the theoretical results obtained earlier on the possible improvement in a seaplane wing model lift-to-drag ratio, by using a deflectable triangular extension along the wing leading edge near the wingtip. We confirm the slight effectiveness of using the wingtip leading edge triangular extensions on the nature of flow around the wing.  相似文献

In connection with projects on a manned base on the Moon, the assessment of radiation risk to staff of the base owing to galactic (GCR) and solar (SEP) cosmic radiation becomes very relevant. The paper describes the methodology for assessing the radiation environment on the lunar surface and in the depths of lunar soil taking into account the primary and secondary radiation caused by protons and nuclei of GCR and SEP. Calculated fluencies of particles are used to estimate the average annual absorbed and equivalent local doses in tissue. Contribution to the dose of secondary neutrons at depths of lunar soil exceeds the contribution of protons. Contribution to the dose of secondary particles generated by GCR nuclei should be taken into account.  相似文献

The solar and heliospheric instruments proposed to study the solar atmosphere at close distances and the inner heliosphere onboard the Interhelioprobe mission are described. Remote observations of the solar surface combined with in-situ measurements at optimum orbital parameters (quasi-corotation with the Sun, multiple positions with respect to the Sun-Earth line, and inclination to the ecliptic plane) provide new information on the fine structure and dynamics of the solar surface, solar flares and ejections, solar corona, and solar wind.  相似文献

A new method of evaluating the absorbed dose onboard spacecraft under the action of particle fluxes of solar cosmic rays (SCR) is described. The method is based on the concepts and formulas of a probabilistic model of SCR proton fluxes beyond the Earth's magnetosphere (GOST R 25645.165-2001) and takes into account variations of particle fluxes at orbits of spacecraft and behind their protective shields.  相似文献
